Despite more than a decade of increased hunting pressure, snow goose numbers remain at historic highs. Some estimates put the population as high as 25 million birds.

So what's the problem?
Subarctic nesting areas are being turned into wastelands. A fragile habitat is being destroyed, perhaps irreversibly. Biologists like Johnson, waterfowl chief at the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, believe both wildlife and waterfowl are at risk.
"(Increased harvest) has stemmed the rapid growth we were seeing, but the population is still very high and we haven't reduced them," says Johnson. "Success is based on the recovery of the subarctic habitats. That hasn't happened. There are still more geese than ever and they're still destroying habitat."
Johnson is part of a team of biologists currently evaluating the effectiveness of expanded hunting for snow geese. First introduced in 1998, the spring conservation hunt has increased harvest rates by more than 50 percent, but Johnson says it's still not enough.
"These geese are now expanding into habitats we never envisioned they could use. They're into the trees and forested areas west of the Hudson Bay lowlands. We never, ever dreamt that would be possible."
Dr. Richard "Rocky" Rockwell has recently returned from his annual research trip to La Perouse Bay in northern Manitoba, where for almost 40 years he has documented the severe degradation of the salt-water coastal marshes. Now, he says, the geese are hitting fresh- water habitats.
Rockwell says freshwater habitat can fully recovery in about five years, "but that means you have to get the geese off it."
Waterfowl managers in both Canada and the United States see hunting as the most efficient tool to reduce populations, but they are less hopeful of getting the job done today than they were 10 years ago.
"Hunters can only take so many geese," Rockwell says.
North American hunters are taking about 700,000 snow geese a year, enough to stabilize some colonies but not enough to reduce numbers overall.
Dr. Jim Leafloor, a research scientist with Environment Canada, spent his summer banding geese on Baffin Island. He says the mid- continent population has increased at least as high as the harvest rate.
"There just aren't enough hunters out there harvesting geese," says Leafloor. "I think what happens is there's some highly skilled and motivated snow goose hunters that account for a fairly big chunk of the harvest. But for most guys snow geese are pretty frustrating. They require a lot of patience and equipment."
So what are the alternatives? Johnson co-authored a report for the Arctic Goose Joint Venture in which he outlined options ranging from mass live-capture on the breeding grounds to the use of chemical avicides. None of the "direct control" measures are very appealing to a society increasingly concerned about animal rights.
Any measures to further control goose populations will face intense pressure from groups like the Animal Alliance of Canada. It was part of a coalition that initially challenged the legality of the expanded conservation hunt. Liz White, spokesperson for the Alliance, insists current goose populations are a naturally occurring event and should be left to run its course.
"It's illogical to look at a tiny part of the arctic, like La Perouse Bay, and say this represents the entire ecosystem," says White. "Do we really believe the geese who eat various plants in the arctic have never created the same kind of environmental impact, that it never happened before, that it is an aberration?"
That leaves biologists like Johnson stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Science tells him there's a problem, but society has trouble agreeing on what needs to done. So what does the future hold?
"That's the million-dollar question," says Johnson. "None of the alternative control measures are very good. They're all very difficult. They're all very expensive. They're all pretty ugly. I'm not optimistic that aggressive action will be taken. That's a difficult, difficult decision to make."
So for now, we're left with the status quo. Hunters can confidently expect the spring hunt to continue. There may be recommendations to further loosen restrictions. Perhaps more efforts will be made to increase the number of hunters. And the geese? They'll continue to do what they do best: learn, adapt and survive.

Delta Waterfowl's Top 10 Snow Goose Hunting Tips

1) Scouting: If youdon’t find the birds, they likely won’t find you. “You have to scout, scout andscout some more,” says Scott Terning, Delta’s director of recruitment andeducation. Watch the snow line; birds will be south of it, always. You can alsouse a number of online sources to aid your scouting and get refuge reports todetermine bird concentrations, but remember nothing compares to doing real-timescouting.” Terning recommends finding the largest concentration of birds on alake, wetland or piece of sheet water. During the spring, he said, it’s commonto locate multiple roosts in a given area. “You want to scout these birds andlocate where they are feeding for your hunt the next day,” Terning says.“Taking these simple first steps will save you a lot of time and frustration.”

2) The sheet waterconnection: “In the spring finding sheet water is often the key element infinding birds,” says Delta Waterfowl Senior Vice President John Devney. “Theyseem to decoy far better in fields with a little water in them. Spring snowswill often look for corn stubble and sheet water in the same field.”

3) Concealment: Hide, hide, hide! Fooling spring snows requires you stay well hidden. Take advantageof any field changes that allow for better concealment—from drainages to lowspots to missed field vegetation. Conceal ground blinds from all angles and usedecoys to break up their outlines. In grain fields it’s sometimes best to ditchthe ground blinds and hunt in your best “whites.” And don’t forget yourfacemask. There’s typically no margin for error.

4) Decoys: Youdon’t need a 1,000-decoy spread to have a successful hunt, says Terning. “Youneed a respectable amount of decoys, and the best ones you have, becausequality can be more important than quantity,” he said, noting that you shouldteam up with a friend if you don’t have enough decoys. “Bring along somefloaters too. You’ll want to use them in the sheet water.” Keep decoys properlyspaced, about three or four feet between each. The spread will look morenatural from a distance and create the affect of having a larger spread.

5) Movement in decoys: It’svery important to attract distant birds to your spread. Use kites, flyers, flags and other decoys to increase motion, especially directly behind yourblinds on the upwind side of your spread. This will create the illusion ofsnows landing and leap-frogging over each other to feed. “Silosock flyers workreally well to add movement to your spread,” says Terning. Bottom line: employas much movement as possible, even to the point of putting a white vest on yourdog.

6) Late snows: Thelatter part of the migration can provide the best decoy hunting, because themajority of the birds are juveniles. “Young birds are much easier to decoy,”says Delta’s Jim Fisher, Canada’s director of conservation policy. “You won’tsee the number of birds, generally speaking, but the decoy hunting can beexcellent.”

7) Hunter placement indecoys: “Don't be afraid to move within the decoy spread to get to abetter position to shoot lower birds or to have a chance at flaring birds,”says Delta’s Fisher. “Or leave the decoys altogether and get downwind to a spotthat may give you closer shots.”

<v:shapetype coordsize="21600,21600" filled="f" id="_x0000_t75" o:preferrelative="t" o:spt="75" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" stroked="f"> <v:stroke joinstyle="miter"> <v:formulas> <v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"> <v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"> <v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"> <v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"> <v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"> <v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"> <v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"> <v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"> <v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"> <v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"> <v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"> <v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"> </v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:formulas> <v:path gradientshapeok="t" o:connecttype="rect" o:extrusionok="f"> <o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit"></o:lock></v:path></v:stroke></v:shapetype>8) Preparefor fog and mud: Spring hunters will likely find both in copious amounts. “Morningfog can really get guys mixed up when they’re looking for the field theyreceived permission to hunt the night before, so make a mental note oflandmarks to guide you to the right spot,” says Delta’s Terning. “If the foghas been really bad, use a GPS to plot the precise location of where you wantto set up the following day. A good map and GPS are indispensable.” The springseason has another constant: mud. Be prepared for it; bring extra clothes/gearand have a plan for transporting decoys because driving a truck and trailerinto a field may not be an option. “Hunters need to do their best to leave thesmallest footprint as possible,” says Delta’s Devney. “Be respectful oflandowner property and be extremely careful not to tear up muddy roads.”

9) Ballistics andshooting: Fisher strongly recommends using quality shells. “I like to usethree-inch shot shells with BB or BBB,” he said. “Be judicious with the shotsyou take, know your maximum effective range and don’t stray from it. After all,it’s hunting, not shooting.”

10) Food, glorious, food: Have aplan. Bring a cooler, ice and cleaning materials. Know the rules on how tolegally transport birds. Snow geese, contrary to popular myth, are superb tablefare. Bring a grill or stove and prepare a feast in the field. An easy recipe:take the tenderloins from several goose breasts. Dredge them in seasoned flourand fry. Serve them with your favorite dipping sauce. Delta President Rob Olsonsays sweet chili or plum and hot mustard is a terrific combination. Use great care not to burn the mixture.
If burnt, the entire mixture must be thrown out and you will have to start over.
Once the mixture is brown, cut back the heat and
add about 1 to 2 quarts of water.
Cut up four medium sized (tennis ball size) onions into
medium sized pieces not too small.
Do the same for two large green peppers,
one bunch of onion tops and three large sticks of celery.

Heat roux and water mixture and stir in the onions, peppers, celery.
Add the onion tops and 1 teaspoon of chopped garlic after the
onions, peppers, and celery have cooked (sautéed or glazed) fairly well.
Do not hurry the cooking, allow to cook slowly. Stir occasionally.
Season to taste with salt, black pepper and your favorite Cajun spices
(Art likes Tony's and Konriko Cajun spices).
Brown meat - over a hot fire so that the meat is seared and
the juices captured within.
Add browned meat to the vegetable/roux mixture.
Cover and let cook.

The gumbo is done when the meat is well cooked
At least 45 minutes over a medium fire.
You can add FRESH cut-up sausage chunks or garlic sausage
near the end of the cooking if desired.
If the sausage contains lots of fat, you should
cook it first to remove some of the fat.
Serve over rice with garlic or hot French bread on the side
accompanied by a good wine.

Corned Beef Goose Breast

Ingredients:
- 6 to 8 goose breast filets (4 to 6 lbs)
- 5 tablespoons Morton Tenderquick mix
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon ground paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground bay leaves
- 1 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions

Trim, skin, and clean up breast filets
(or beef brisket or boneless cut of deer, elk, etc)
In a small bowl, mix Morton Tender Quick and
remaining dry ingredients and spices
(DO NOT Substitute Any "Meat Tenderizer" For Morton Tender Quick)
Thoroughly rub mixture into all sides of breast filets.
Place filets into a plastic bag and close securely.
Place in refrigerator and allow to cure 5 days
per inch of meat thickness (a week seems to work fine for goose breasts)
Place filets in pot and add water to cover. We hooted and hollerd and slaughtered the geese.Really good fields in areas with tons of birds. In my opinion it was the best 2 day hunt i have ever been on in 10 years of hunting snows. We issued your other guide Gerad a ton of crap and he gave it back and we had a absoulute blast.I never laughed so hard my whole life out there telling stories and diving in the blinds as waves of geese came locked up in the spread. The 4 wheeler ride to the fields really made it easy on my dad. Thanks for the great hunt and will see you next year!!
Matt

2011 Snow Goose Season Continues - Juvies Are Coming

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 104px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Jof7rvoj8Ts/TXau2zQ8kCI/AAAAAAAAAuc/Gl3rnVPqFlw/s200/mound_city_2011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581841044669763618" />
Well I would use alot of words to describe the picuture but i think that everyone can see it. Officials predict that by the middle of the next decade, roughly two million snowies might compete for limited space, doubling in current size. (Delta Waterfowl media photo)

By Steve Hickoff

The so-called regular waterfowl seasons may be over, but don’t put your gear away just yet. Clean it, for sure, but keep it ready to roll . . .

In the heavily human-populated Atlantic Flyway where I write this — and elsewhere around the United States — it’s not just humankind competing for space. Snow goose numbers are at all-time highs, migration time depending.

That’s good news for hunters. In late-winter and early-spring you can jumpstart your waterfowl season, extending it into spring turkey time.

Snow goose numbers exceed available food and habitat in many areas. As a result, federal and state wildlife management organizations now offer expanded seasons for these waterfowl in many locations. By conservation order, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has specifically mandated this effort to control growing numbers.

Though they’re hunted elsewhere, eight states in the Atlantic Flyway were open last year under the “conservation order” for late-winter and early-spring snow goose hunting. These included North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware to the south, and New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Vermont to the north. Check your current regulations as changes may appear there.

More geese? Waterfowl hunters couldn’t be happier. So how do you hunt them?

First check to see if your state offers a late-winter or early-spring season. Many do.

Once licenses, permits and stamps are secured, assess your waterfowling gear. You may need to amp up your decoy holdings with snow goose fakes. Shells and full-body options are widely available for this growing sport.

As with real estate, location is everything. Scout for these so-called “light geese” in agricultural haunts. Gain permission from landowners to hunt these spots. Be there before dawn the next morning to set your spread of dekes.

Huddled in a layout blind, snow goose calls on a lanyard around your neck, non-toxic loads chambered in your shotgun, you’re ready to roll.

Some other tips to hunting these light geese include:

Your effort to find them might begin where they roost, and include locating a nearby field where they feed and/or might forage. Study them for a pattern of use. They’ll often move and feed early in the day and later in the afternoon, loafing elsewhere during midday. Sometimes too they just move on.

Study maps, drive and glass fields, and seek landowner permission at all costs, explaining what you’ll be doing and even why. Set your spread at midday for later afternoon hunts. If it feels right, get back there the next morning too. Don’t pressure a spot; then again, hunt it while it’s hot and even just a little warm.

As camouflage goes, wear white if snow covers the ground, or standard options if you’re in a layout blind or using natural cover. Blend in, no matter what. Snowies feel the pressure, and adjust accordingly. If possible, hide all unnatural evidence, including your truck, trailer and four-wheeler. Make it look real.

Spreads should consist of as many snow goose decoys as possible. Full body snows, shell fakes, and silhouettes should round off your presentation. It’s not unusual for a hardcore snow goose hunter to place several hundred to even 1,000 or more decoys out in a field, and even use wing flags to impart movement to the spread.

Snow Goose Action

Spring Snow Goose Migration Update

Well mother nature put the breaks on the whole thought of an early arrival of the snow geese in Missouri. This is a simple dish that requires a little time to cook, but the preparation is relatively simple. It's great for cooking in large batches and freezing for later use. It's also a good way to make use of a bunch of snow geese!

1/2 pound bacon, chopped
1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
4 cups snow goose breast, skin and gristle removed - cut into large cubes
3 tablespoons olive oil
20-24 pearl onions, peeled
2 garlic cloves, minced
3 cups mushrooms, quartered
2 cups dry red wine
2/3 cups beef stock
1 cup chopped tomatoes, fresh or canned
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon dried thyme

1. Heat a large oven-safe casserole dish over medium heat. Add bacon and cook until crisp and golden brown. Remove bacon and reserve.

2. Combine flour, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Dredge cubed goose in flour mixture and brown in bacon grease, adding a few pieces at a time. When well browned, remove from dish and reserve.

3. Increase heat to medium-high and add olive oil. When oil is hot, add onions and cook while stirring often for 5 minutes, or until onions are lightly browned. Add garlic and mushrooms and cook for 3 minutes more. Stir in remaining ingredients, including reserved bacon and browned goose.

4.
